Check your Turkey (Türkiye) study visa application before you apply

This page shows what the official pages say a Turkey (Türkiye) study visa application must contain, in their own words, with a free pre-check of your answers.

The Turkish embassy or consulate decides the visa (for Nigeria, the Turkish Embassy in Abuja). After arrival, the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the province of your university decides the student residence permit.Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye (the visa) and the Presidency of Migration Management (the residence permit)Student (education) visa, then a student residence permit after arrival

What is being checked

Your admission letter, the money the rules ask you to show for living costs, your fees, the language level for your course, health insurance where it is asked for, and your past visas.

Why applications fail

Money shown in the wrong form or below the amount the rules set, an admission that is not final, or papers that do not match each other.

What our software does

The free pre-check reads your answers against these rules and shows where they usually fall short. Paid study checks for Turkey (Türkiye) are not open yet.

Law No. 6458, Article 15(1)(f); student visa from a Turkish consulate

Admission letter and the purpose of study

fail to supply proof of the reason for their purpose of entry into, transit from or stay in Turkey

What the officer assesses: Whether you show the real reason for the trip: an admission letter from a Turkish university for the course you will study, matching your name and passport.

A study trip needs a student visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate, not an e-Visa. The admission letter is the proof that you are going to study. Apply for the visa as soon as you get it, because the visa can take time.

Where this comes from 3 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • The admission letter from the Turkish university, with your name, the course and the start date
  • Your passport, with the same name as on the admission letter
  • The signed visa application form from the pre-application system

Law No. 6458, Article 15(1)(g)

Money for your stay

do not possess sufficient and sustainable resources

What the officer assesses: Whether you, a sponsor or a scholarship can pay for your stay in Türkiye, and whether the money has a clear source.

The law says a visa shall be refused if you do not have enough money that will last for your stay. No official page gives a fixed amount for students. So show enough money for fees and living costs, from a source you can explain. A scholarship letter can show this too.

Evidence that addresses it

  • Your bank statements, or your sponsor's, with the account holder's name
  • For a sponsor: a letter saying they will pay, proof of how you are related, and proof of their income
  • A scholarship award letter, if you have one, for example from Türkiye Scholarships
  • Any receipt for fees already paid to the university

Law No. 6458, Article 15(1)(e); student residence permit health insurance

Health insurance for the visa and the residence permit

All applicants are required to have a medical insurance that will be valid during their stay in Türkiye.

What the officer assesses: Whether medical insurance covers your whole stay for the visa, and whether you will have health insurance when you apply for the residence permit.

Every visa applicant needs medical insurance that lasts for the stay. After you arrive, the residence permit also needs health insurance. Students can join the state general health insurance within three months of starting. If you miss those three months, you need private health insurance instead.

Where this comes from 3 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • A medical insurance policy that covers the dates of your stay in Türkiye
  • After arrival: proof of the state general health insurance, or a private health insurance policy

Law No. 6458, Article 15(1)(a) and Article 7(1)(b)

Passport valid long enough

passport or travel document is not valid at least sixty days beyond the expiry date of the visa requested

What the officer assesses: Whether your passport is valid for at least 60 days after the visa or residence permit ends.

Your passport must stay valid for at least 60 days after the visa ends. The same 60 days apply to the residence permit. A study course lasts years, so a passport that ends soon will cause trouble later too.

Türkiye Scholarships: Turkish preparatory education

Language of study, and Turkish for scholarship students

Students who will receive education within the scope of Türkiye Scholarships are required to take Turkish preparatory courses in their first year, regardless of the language of study.

What the officer assesses: Whether you can study in the language of your course, and, for a Türkiye Scholarships student, whether the year of Turkish classes is planned for.

Türkiye Scholarships is the state scholarship. Its students must take a year of Turkish classes first, even if the course is taught in English. A C1 Turkish certificate from the Yunus Emre Institute or a university Turkish centre lets you skip it. For other students, the university sets the language rule in its admission letter.

Law No. 6458, Articles 39 and 40; student residence permit after arrival

Student residence permit after you arrive

a student residence permit shall not be issued, cancelled if has been issued, refused renewal when:

What the officer assesses: Whether you enrol at the university and apply on e-ikamet within your legal stay, give an address in Türkiye, hand in the documents on time, and keep studying.

The visa only lets you in. After you arrive, enrol at the university, then apply for the student residence permit on e-ikamet before your legal stay runs out. Give your address, pay the card fee and take the papers to the university's international student office. The permit can be refused or cancelled if the rules are not met, if it looks like you will not keep studying, or if you use it for something other than study. Missing papers must be handed in within the time given, which can be up to 30 days.

Where this comes from 7 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • Proof of university enrolment (your student certificate)
  • The first page of the e-ikamet application form
  • A copy of the passport you entered Türkiye with
  • The receipt for the residence permit card fee (964,00 TL in 2026)
  • A document showing your address in Türkiye
  • A digital biometric photo

Entry bans, unpaid overstay fees and false documents

are banned from entering Turkey

What the officer assesses: Whether you have an entry ban or removal decision for Türkiye, unpaid fees or fines from an earlier overstay, or any document that is false or was got by deceit.

A visa shall be refused if you are banned from entering Türkiye, or if you will not pay money owed from overstaying an earlier visa or permit. A ban or removal order also stops a student residence permit. A false document, or one got by lying, is a reason to refuse entry. Tell the truth about past visits and refusals.

Where this comes from 4 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • Old passports showing past visits to Türkiye and the dates you left
  • Receipts for any overstay fees or fines already paid
  • Letters for any earlier visa refusals, for any country

This is two steps. First a student (education) visa from a Turkish embassy or consulate, applied for after the university sends your admission letter. A Turkish visa gives at most 90 days, so after you arrive you enrol at the university and then apply for a student residence permit online on e-ikamet, while your legal stay is still running. The Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the university's province decides it. The official pages do not publish a list of refusal reasons for student visas, and they do not set a minimum amount of money. So these grounds rest on Article 15 of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection No. 6458, which lists when a visa shall be refused, on Articles 38 to 40, which set the student residence permit rules, and on what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency of Migration Management say an application needs. The English text of the law is the Presidency's own translation, which it marks as unofficial. Türkiye Scholarships (YTB) is the state scholarship, and its own rules apply only to its scholars. No official page sets how many months of bank statements to send: the 6 months here is our own working default, not an official rule.

Where does your study application stand?

Six questions, read against the requirements above. Nothing you choose leaves this page.

  1. 1 Where are you with your place on the course?

The school’s confirmation (a CAS, a letter of acceptance or an I-20) comes before the visa, and the visa is checked against it.

  2. 2 Have you paid the course fees?

Fees paid reduce the money you have to show, and in Ireland and most Canadian cases they must be paid before you apply.

  3. 3 How will you pay for your living costs?

Every destination checks that the money is there and that its source makes sense.

  4. 4 How will you show your English?

The UK and Ireland set a level for the visa itself; Canada and the US rely on the school’s own entry requirement.

  5. 5 How does this course follow your last study?

Officers ask why this course, now, and a gap or a change of subject has to be explained.

  6. 6 What is your visa history?

A previous refusal for any country has to be declared and answered.
