Check your Poland study visa application before you apply

This page shows what the official pages say a Poland study visa application must contain, in their own words, with a free pre-check of your answers.

ConsulConsul of the Republic of Poland (Ministry of Foreign Affairs)National (D) visa for studies

What is being checked

Your admission letter, the money the rules ask you to show for living costs, your fees, the language level for your course, health insurance where it is asked for, and your past visas.

Why applications fail

Money shown in the wrong form or below the amount the rules set, an admission that is not final, or papers that do not match each other.

What our software does

The free pre-check reads your answers against these rules and shows where they usually fall short. Paid study checks for Poland are not open yet.

Act on Foreigners, art. 65(1)(8); Embassy in Abuja study checklist

Letter of acceptance and the purpose of your stay

The original acceptance letter of the unit conducting the studies on admission to studies or on continuation of studies.

What the officer assesses: Whether an original acceptance letter from the Polish university shows you are admitted to the course, and whether the rest of the file explains why you are going and how you will study.

You need the original letter from the Polish university that says it has accepted you. A copy or a photo is not taken. The law says the consul must refuse if you do not explain the purpose or the terms of your stay. So the letter, your form and your other papers must all tell the same story about the course.

Where this comes from 3 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • The original acceptance letter from the Polish university
  • The visa form, with the university name, the course and the year filled in the same way as on the letter
  • Anything that shows why you chose this course

Act of 4 April 2025 (Dz.U. 2025 poz. 622); Embassy notices on the 1 July 2025 student visa reform

School diploma and the NAWA written statement

Failure to submit the required written information will result in the refusal of the student visa application.

What the officer assesses: Whether a first-year student with a school certificate from outside the EU, OECD or EFTA has the NAWA written statement, and whether the diplomas used for admission are legalised.

From 1 July 2025, if you start the first year of a bachelor's degree or a long master's degree, and your school certificate is from a country outside the EU, OECD or EFTA (Nigeria, Ghana and India are outside these), you need a written statement from NAWA. NAWA is the Polish state agency for academic exchange. The statement says your school certificate lets you study in Poland. You ask for it online, in NAWA's SYRENA system, before you apply for the visa. Without it, the visa is refused. The Abuja embassy also asks for the diplomas used for your admission, with superlegalisation (an official stamp that proves a document is real).

Where this comes from 4 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • The NAWA written statement on your school certificate, or a decision from a Polish Education Board (Kurator Oswiaty) that already recognised it
  • The diplomas used for your admission, with superlegalisation
  • Transcripts of your past studies

Proof that tuition fees are paid

Proof of payment of the fees (if aplicable).

What the officer assesses: Whether a paid course has proof that the fees were paid to the university, in the student's name.

If your course costs money, bring proof that you paid the fees. Later, in Poland, the residence permit for studies also asks for proof that you paid for the term or the year. Read your contract with the university about refunds. The embassy says refunds after a visa refusal are a matter between you and the university.

Evidence that addresses it

  • The university's receipt or the bank transfer to the university
  • The acceptance letter or contract that states the fee

Money for living costs and the trip home

776 PLN for every month of stay (776 PLN x 12 months = 9 312 PLN) or their equivalent in a foreign currency.

What the officer assesses: Whether you show at least 2,500 PLN for the trip home, the cost of your housing, and 776 PLN for each month (9,312 PLN for a year), and whether the proof is one the embassy accepts.

The embassy sets the amount. You need 2,500 PLN for a return trip, plus the cost of your housing, plus 776 PLN for every month you stay. For 12 months that is 9,312 PLN, or the same in another currency. If family members come with you, it is 600 PLN a month for each person. You can show this with original bank statements for the last 6 months, a certificate from a bank in Poland, a scholarship letter, or a sponsor letter. Only a family member can be your sponsor, and you must prove you are related. The law says the consul must refuse if the money is not enough. You also need written proof of where you will live for the whole visa, with the rent shown.

Where this comes from 6 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • Original bank statements for the last 6 months, with the contact details of the bank officer who confirms them
  • Or a certificate of funds from a bank based in Poland
  • Or a letter granting you a scholarship
  • Or the original sponsor letter confirmed by the consul, with proof the sponsor is a family member and the sponsor's own bank documents
  • Written proof of where you will live for the whole visa period, with the rent, or an invitation registered with the Urzad Wojewodzki

Law on Higher Education and Science, art. 70(5a)-(5e), as amended by Dz.U. 2025 poz. 622; Embassy study checklist

Language of the course at level B2 or higher

A certificate or other document confirming knowledge of the language of instruction in Poland at a level not lower than B2.

What the officer assesses: Whether a language certificate shows the language the course is taught in (English or Polish) at the level the university set, and never below B2.

Since July 2025 the law says a Polish university must check that a foreign student knows the course language at level B2 or higher. B2 means you can follow lessons and talk about most topics without much trouble. If the course is in English, show an English certificate. If it is in Polish, show a Polish one. The Abuja checklist asks for an English certificate among your education papers. Ask your university which certificates it takes.

Where this comes from 3 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • A language certificate for the course language, at B2 or higher
  • The university's note of the level it asks for

Travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 EUR

Travel medical insurance with an insurance amount of no less than EUR 30,000 must be valid for the period of the intended stay of the foreigner on the territory of the Republic of Poland

What the officer assesses: Whether the policy covers at least 30,000 EUR, covers the whole planned stay, and comes from an insurer that meets the Polish rules.

You need travel medical insurance worth at least 30,000 EUR for the whole time you plan to stay. It must pay for emergency care, hospital care and a trip home for medical reasons. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps a list of insurers that meet the rules. The law says the consul must refuse if this insurance is missing.

A past student visa used for something else

poprzedzająca ją wiza była wykorzystana w innym celu niż cel, w jakim została wydana

What the officer assesses: Whether you held an earlier Polish student visa, whether you really studied on it, and whether your form lists your Schengen and national visas from the last 5 years.

If you ask for another student visa, the consul must refuse when the facts show your last one was used for something other than study. The form also asks about every Schengen or Polish national visa you had in the last 5 years. List them all and show you used each one for what it was for.

Where this comes from 2 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • Copies of your past Schengen and Polish visas from the last 5 years
  • For a past student visa: transcripts or a letter from the university showing you studied
  • Any past refusal form, with what has changed since

False data, or doubt about the real purpose

złożył on wniosek zawierający nieprawdziwe dane osobowe lub fałszywe informacje lub dołączył do niego dokumenty zawierające takie dane lub informacje

What the officer assesses: Whether every detail on the form matches the documents, spelling included, and whether anything suggests the real purpose is not study.

The consul must refuse if the form has false details or false documents. The consul must also refuse if there is good reason to doubt that study is the real purpose. The Abuja embassy asks that the form match your documents exactly, even in spelling.

Where this comes from 3 official sources

This is a Polish national long-stay D visa for study, not a Schengen short-stay visa. The Polish consul decides it. In Nigeria that is the Consular Section of the Embassy of Poland in Abuja. The visa lasts at most one year. To stay longer, you ask for a temporary residence permit for studies after you arrive. The voivode (the regional governor's office) where you live decides that permit. The Act on Foreigners lists the reasons a consul must refuse a national visa, and the Abuja embassy lists the documents a study application must contain. These grounds rest on both. Under that Act, doubt about whether you will leave Poland when the visa ends is not used as a reason for a study visa. Since 1 July 2025, most first-year students with a school certificate from outside the EU, OECD or EFTA also need a written statement from NAWA, the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, which is a state agency.

Where does your study application stand?

Six questions, read against the requirements above. Nothing you choose leaves this page.

  1. 1 Where are you with your place on the course?

The school’s confirmation (a CAS, a letter of acceptance or an I-20) comes before the visa, and the visa is checked against it.

  2. 2 Have you paid the course fees?

Fees paid reduce the money you have to show, and in Ireland and most Canadian cases they must be paid before you apply.

  3. 3 How will you pay for your living costs?

Every destination checks that the money is there and that its source makes sense.

  4. 4 How will you show your English?

The UK and Ireland set a level for the visa itself; Canada and the US rely on the school’s own entry requirement.

  5. 5 How does this course follow your last study?

Officers ask why this course, now, and a gap or a change of subject has to be explained.

  6. 6 What is your visa history?

A previous refusal for any country has to be declared and answered.
