Read your refusal letter one reason at a time. Find the rule behind each reason. Then fix each one with new proof, not new words. Tell the truth about the past refusal on the new form. Sending the same papers again gives the officer nothing new, so wait until you can show something stronger.
Can I apply again after a refusal?
Yes. For a UK, Schengen, Canada or US visitor visa you can make a new application. A new one is judged on what you send with it. The EU handbook for officers puts it like this:
“A previous visa refusal shall not lead to an automatic refusal of an application and each application must be assessed on its own merits and on the basis of all available information.”
Handbook for the processing of visa applications and the modification of issued visas, Part II, point 6.1, basic principles
That is good news, but it cuts both ways. If you send the same papers, the officer has the same facts. A new form only helps if it answers the reasons you were refused.
How do I read my refusal letter?
The letter is your to-do list. In the UK, the guide for officers says the reasons must be clear:
“The reasons for refusal must be factual, clear, and relevant to the application.”

Go through the letter slowly. For each reason, write down three things:
- The words the officer used, copied exactly.
- The rule it points to, such as V 4.2(a) in the UK, a box number on a Schengen form, section 179(b) in Canada or 214(b) in the US.
- The paper or fact that would answer it.
Do not skip a reason because it seems small. Each reason the officer gave is a reason they could give again.
How do I fix each reason?
Fix it with proof. Saying more is not the same as showing more. Here are some common fixes:
- Doubt that you will go home: a job letter with your leave dates, payslips, business papers, a home in your name, and proof of family who rely on you.
- An unclear reason for the trip: an invitation, bookings and a short trip plan, all with the same dates.
- Money that does not add up: bank statements that show where the money came from, and a letter from anyone who is paying.
- Papers that do not match: the same name, dates and job title on every page.
If your life has changed since the last form, that can be the clearest answer. A new job, a promotion, a new home or a new child is a real change. Say what changed and prove it.
Do I have to say I was refused before?
Yes. When a form asks about past refusals, tell the truth, for every country. In the UK, leaving out a fact that matters is a reason to refuse on its own:
“(b) did not disclose relevant facts in relation to the application.”
Immigration Rules, Part Suitability, SUI 10.1(b)
The UK rules also count deception in an earlier application as a breach of immigration law, which is its own reason to refuse:
“(d) used deception in relation to a previous application (whether or not successfully); or”
Immigration Rules, Part Suitability, SUI 11.4(d)
A refusal you tell them about is a fact to explain. A refusal you hide can turn into a much bigger problem.
Should I appeal or apply again?
It depends on the country. Most UK visitor refusals have no appeal, and a US 214(b) refusal has none. A Schengen refusal can be appealed in the country that refused it. In Canada, a court can be asked to review the decision, which needs a Canadian lawyer. For most people, a new and stronger application is the main way forward. If you think the officer made a clear mistake about the law, speak to a lawyer or a regulated immigration adviser first.
When should I apply again?
When you can show something new. There is no prize for speed. Applying again the next week with the same papers gives the officer nothing new to weigh. Take the time to gather the proof that answers each reason. Then check that every paper agrees with every other paper, and with your form.
Questions people ask
How long should I wait before I reapply?
The rules quoted here do not set a waiting time for a visitor visa. What matters is having something new to show. Apply again when you can answer each reason with proof.
Should I write a cover letter this time?
A short, clear letter can help. Use it to answer each reason in the refusal, in order, and point to the paper that proves each point. Keep it honest and plain.
Will one refusal affect my visas for other countries?
Many visa forms ask if you have ever been refused. Say yes if you have, and explain what changed. Hiding it is the real risk.
Does Approvable send my application for me?
No. The app checks your papers and shows what to fix. You send the application yourself, to the official visa service.
