Nigerian passport holders can visit Kenya for up to 60 days without an eTA, and Ghanaians for up to 90. Indian passport holders need one. This page shows what the official pages ask a visitor to show, in their own words.

Turned away at the border

The possession of an eTA is not the final authority to enter the Republic of Kenya. Admissibility will be determined at the point of entry.

Where this comes from 2 official sources

Evidence that addresses it

  • Your eTA, if your passport needs one
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Your accommodation booking
  • Any invitation letter and proof you can pay for the trip

Kenya no longer issues visit visas. Since January 2024 most visitors apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) at etakenya.go.ke before they travel. Since the 2025 rules, many African nationals need no eTA at all for a short stay. Nigerian passport holders need no eTA for up to 60 days, and Ghanaian passport holders need none for up to 90 days. Indian passport holders still need an eTA. The eTA pages do not publish refusal reasons. So these grounds rest on what the eTA application must contain, the questions on the official eTA form, and the people the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act says must be refused entry. An eTA is not the final word: the officer at the border decides who comes in, and the same Act applies to people who need no eTA. Fees are in US dollars. The 6 months of bank statements is a working default, because no official page read sets a money rule or a statement period. The 90 day stay is a working default too: the rules let a visitor's pass run up to six months, and Nigerians without an eTA may stay up to 60 days.

Where does your application stand?

Answer a few questions and see how each requirement usually reads on your facts.

  1. 1 Why are you going?

The purpose has to be one the visa permits, and the rest of the application has to match it.

  2. 2 Who is paying for the trip?

Money that is not yours has to be evidenced by the person whose money it is.

  3. 3 What do you do at home?

This is the tie the officer weighs most heavily, and the one most often left unevidenced.

  4. 4 What is your travel history?

Travel you completed and returned from is the single most useful thing you can show.
